134 (Bedford) Squadron represented Bedford and Cambridgeshire Wing to take part in three hotly contested competitions at the Central and East Region Field Day held at Royal Air Force Wittering, Cambridgeshire, on Sunday 1st September 2013.
Firstly in the Regional Drill Competition, the team of 12 cadets, led by Cadet Warrant Officer Jonathon Bell (18 yrs), performed a set competition routine comprising of 52 individual drill movements under the ever watchful and critical eyes of the Station Warrant Officer who judged the competition.
Having completed the Drill Competition it was time for the Banner Party to march onto the square for the Regional Banner Drill Competition. Under the command of Sergeant Rowan Shawl (17 yrs) the team comprising Cadet Warrant Officer Jonathon Bell (18 yrs) Sergeant Rob Goates (17 yrs), Corporal Leonnie Gomes (16 yrs) and Cadet Lauran Fletcher (16 yrs) gave an excellent demonstration of Banner Drill and left the drill square.
Both the drill and banner drill Teams were up against 5 other teams from across the Central and East Region of the Air Cadet Organisation who all put on excellent drill displays.
Shortly after all teams had finished the competitions, the Bedford cadets waited for the results. The drill team came an impressive 2nd, missing out on the top spot by only 2 points. CWO Jonathon Bell was also awarded 2nd place in the award for the Best Drill NCO, finally the Banner team came a respectable joint 4th in their competition. Along with other awards the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing team had won they were crowned as Regional Field Day Champions 2013 ending Norfolk and Suffolk Wing seven year winning streak.
The team will now enjoy a well deserved break from training and will hit training again in early 2014. The 19 Cadet strong team are more determined than ever.
Sergeant James Tye the unit’s Drill Instructor said, “I am immensely proud of how the team performed, to do so well in three different contests on the same day demonstrates their commitment to their training over the past months."
