During the May Bank Holiday weekend 20 cadets and staff from 134 (Bedford) Squadron successfully completed the annual Spitfire Cadet March in Folkestone, Kent.
Staying at Dibgate Camp, St Martin’s Plain, close to the Channel Tunnel Terminal, the cadets set up an impressive base camp featuring male and female accommodation, field kitchen, mess tent and cinema.
Prior to the Cadet March, the Squadron were able to enjoy a day on the beach enjoying ice cream, sandcastle construction and usual running around carnage.
The Spitfire March took place on the Sunday, and began once again with a filling breakfast, before the cadets split into their respective routes. 7 cadets tackled the demanding 26 mile (42km) Red Route, whilst the remaining 10 cadets accompanied, by Sgt James Tye, tackled the 16 mile (27km) Blue Route.
During the course of the March, Sgt Tye delivered a history lesson on the Battle of Britain and Operation Sealion, the German plan for the invasion of Britain. The cadets even found time to visit a WW2 pillbox to see for themselves the preparations that were made to defend the country from invasion.
Throughout the weekend catering support was provided by our newest member of staff, Civilian Instructor Mr Barry Coupe.
In true Bedford Squadron style, the weekend was concluded with the traditional medal presentations and a review of the weekend’s photos which the cadets took great delight in mocking another.
Cadet William Woodward (15 yrs) said, “It was a fantastic camp. On return to the camp following the March, I had a great sense of achievement knowing that I, and the other cadets, had done something special.”
Sgt Tye who organised the weekend said, “We have had a fantastic time in Folkestone and once again the weekend has been greatly enjoyed by the cadets. For the first time in many years the weather was kind to us. I am delighted that all the cadets have gained a Spitfire March medal and some said this year’s event was better than previous years”.
