Months of hard work and effort by cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron has seen them achieve their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards. To achieve the award the cadets undertake 4 Award Sections; Volunteering, learning a new skill, participating in physical activity and planning an expedition.
The Volunteering Section encompasses cadets strengthening ties within the local community and promoting the ‘light blue’ footprint for the Royal Air force. Learning a skill saw marksmanship principles developed on live firing range practices and physical activity included cadets undertaking their RAF Fitness Test at RAF Henlow. For the Expedition Section, the Bronze candidates undertook a two day, one night expedition in Bedfordshire and the Silver Candidates undertook a three day, two night expedition in the Peak District. For both Award Level candidates, their navigation, teamwork, and physical endurance were put to the test in the challenging terrain and tough weather conditions.
Cdt Corporal Robert Goates (16 yrs.) commented “I really enjoyed completing my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. I particularly enjoyed the expedition in the Peak District where I was able to test my navigation and leadership skills. I hope to now use my skills to benefit the younger cadets on the Squadron and encourage them to participate in the award scheme”.
Fg Off McGregor, who co-ordinates the delivery of the Award, commented “It’s very rewarding to see the cadets’ hard work pay off and it’s inspiring to witness their determination and teamwork on expedition. I have no doubt that with the skills and experiences learned, they will progress on to their next respective levels.”
