Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron have seen their Duke of Edinburgh Award efforts rewarded by gaining their Silver Award. This Summer has seen a concentrated effort in the expedition section of the award with Bronze expeditions in Bedfordshire and Silver expeditions in the Peak District.
Corporals Shawl (16 Yrs) and O’Neale (17 Yrs) and Cadet Beddoe (16 Yrs) have recently completed their Silver Award. The Silver expedition tested their navigation, teamwork and planning skills in the challenging terrain of the Dark Peaks. The group had to be entirely self-sufficient throughout the expedition and had to give careful consideration to the equipment carried, food choices and route planning.
Cpl Shawl commented, “I’m very proud to receive this award. It has given me the confidence to go on and complete the Gold Award and I look forward to the challenges that it will present”.
Fg Off Lyndsay McGregor, who co-ordinates the Award on the Squadron commented, “Its very rewarding to see the efforts of the cadets recognised. They have worked hard across all of the required sections and I am pleased that they are now inspired and motivated to progress onto the next level. Furthermore, it is encouraging to see them use their knowledge and experiences gained to develop and support the younger cadets”.
The Squadron now has a group of cadets ready to undertake the Gold Award and planning has started for expeditions to the Lake District and Snowdonia .
