Moving 4 water filled balloons using a wooden bridge across a fast flowing river was one of the many leadership tasks faced by Air Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron during a packed training day held at the unit’s headquarters in Shortstown, Bedford.
In June of each year all 29 Squadrons within the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing of the Air Training Corps compete against each other over a number of challenging and testing events and scenarios with a view to winning the coveted Field Day Shield.
In 2007 the team gained second place in the competition and since March of this year they have been training hard under the title ‘Operation Spartan’ the name assigned to all their preparations.
A team consisting of 15 Cadets was formed in March following an arduous selection weekend in Ampthill Park, Bedfordshire.
Headed by three of the units experienced Senior NCO’s the team have been put through their paces undertaking leadership training, team building, pioneering, code breaking, fitness training, first aid and aircraft recognition.
For some of the team the Field Day competition is nothing new but for others this will be their very first experience of what is the busiest day in the squadron’s annual calendar.
With only a week to go the team are buoyant and believe that all their hard work will result in success.
Warrant Officer Taylor said, “This year we have worked hard to prepare for the Field Day competition and had a lot of fun doing so. More importantly we have created a strong team who have all developed new skills and matured as the months have passed. This will stand the Squadron well in the future and ensure that our people go on to achieve further success in their cadet careers.”
