134 (Bedford) Squadron |
Air Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron are celebrating having gained 6 Gold and 3 Silver medals in the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Athletics Competition.
Held on Sunday 20th April 2008 at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium the event was attended by cadets from the 29 Squadrons that make up the Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire Wing.
Competing across the range of athletic events, the 15 cadets from Bedford achieved some excellent individual results:
FS Denham
Flight Sergeant Sean Denham, 16 yrs, gained 2 x Gold medals for the 1500m and Shot events.
Cadet Akash Bhagran, 13 yrs, gained 2 x Gold medals in the High jump and 200m and 1 x Silver medal in the 800m.
Cdt Bhagran
Cadet Billy Fahey, 14 yrs, gained 1 x Silver medal in the 400m.
Cadet James Kennedy, 16 yrs, gained 1 x Silver medal in the Shot.
Cadet Tom Powell, 15 yrs, gained 1 x Gold medal for the 800m.
Cadet Jake Riches, 15 yrs, gained 1 x Gold medal for the 1500m.
At the conclusion of the day the individual team trophies were awarded and whilst the Squadron did not win any trophies this year they were well placed in the overall competition.
In the Junior Boys competition the Squadron achieved 3rd place. In the Youths competition the boys team secured 2nd place and in the overall boys competition the Squadron secured 2nd place.
The Squadron still holds two Wing Athletic records, in 2004 the Junior Boys Team set a relay record and in 1996 Sgt Morenys Andrews set a record in the Class E girls High Jump competition.
In support of the days activities the Squadron’s Civilian Committee worked extremely hard running the ‘Dirigible Dinner’ mess tent providing hot food and refreshments to competitors and spectators throughout the day.
Flight Lieutenant Mark Robinson, Officer Commanding 134 (Bedford) Squadron said, “The cadets are to be congratulated on their impressive individual and team performances. When you look at the size of the other teams we had a very small team. However, our achievements show that we have punched well above our weight. I am very, very pleased with the results that we have achieved.”
