They once housed the Airships of the Imperial Airship Service, the R101 and R100. Now the massive airship sheds at Cardington, Bedfordshire, have been used to lift the profile of the local Air Cadet Squadron.

Possibly the largest advert in the world?

Since Christmas, cadets and staff of 134 (Bedford) Squadron have been spending much of their free time painting their squadron website address along the side of shed number 1.

The shed dates back to 1916 and its internal dimensions are impressive, length: 812 ft, width: 180 ft, height: 157 ft, total weight of steel: 4,000 tons.

Safety was a real concern, so hard hats and 'hi-vi' jackets were worn by all

It was not a job for those who have a fear of heights or like to remain clean and tidy but it has finally been completed and is causing a real stir within the local community.

Yet another empty tin of paint!

Hits on the unit’s website, www.134.org.uk have risen dramatically and the project has exceeded all expectations.

Mr Chris Wiggins, the unit’s Media and Communications Officer, said, “Wow, what an achievement, this has been the biggest project we have ever undertaken and it has stretched all our resources to the full. I would like to thank everyone who has assisted us with this project and the list is very large indeed.”
