134 (Bedford) Squadron |
Air Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron have been revising their individual weapons handling drills on the two service rifles currently used during Squadron shooting practices. For Cadets aged 13 to 14 this means the Number 8 .22 rifle and for those aged 14 and over the L98 A1 5.56 rifle.
The training involving 20 Cadets from the Squadron took place at the unit’s headquarters building on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February 2008.
To shoot safely Air Cadets are required to be trained and re tested every 12 months and the weapons handling tests are undertaken under strict, supervised conditions. Any safety mistakes will result in an immediate fail and a session of revision before the test can be taken again.
New recruits and experienced Cadets were put through their paces throughout the weekend and following extensive testing all but two were all qualified to shoot during the units next range practice.
Warrant Officer Oliver Browne one of the Squadrons two Range Officers said “This has been another very successful weekend; achieving results on two counts. Previously qualified cadets have demonstrated currency by re-qualifying on both weapon systems as well as a number of the latest generation of recruits getting themselves prepped for their first range experience within the Air Cadets.”
