Medal Haul

Air Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron are celebrating a record medal haul having successfully competed in the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Cross Country competition held at Bassingbourne Barracks, Cambridgeshire.

Training for this year’s event, which was held on Sunday 18th November 2007, commenced at the end of summer and saw the Cadets training each and every Sunday morning at Chicksands Woods, Bedfordshire.

On a typical overcast and murky day the competition commenced with the Cadets running a course of approximately 3 miles around the former airfield at Bassingbourne Barracks.

Success came early with Cadet Jake Riches, 14 yrs, coming third in the Boys Junior race closely followed by his fellow teammates, Cadets Ryan Sharples, Nicholas Every and Ashly Arzu.

Sergeant Sean Denham, 16 yrs, raced across the finishing line to secure an impressive first place in the Boys Youth race and was followed by Cadet Tom Powell, 15 yrs, who seized a very credible second place, and fellow team members Daniele Malandra and Scott Pickering

Sergeant James Tye, snatched third place in the Senior Boys race 18 yrs, and was followed across the line shortly afterwards by Sergeant Michael Every, 17 yrs, and Corporal Ryan Bubbins, 17 yrs.

Following the races Cadets from the Wing assembled for the presentation of awards. The Squadron won three team trophies; these being the Boys Junior trophy (6th time the Sqn has won this trophy), Boys Youth trophy (4th year in a row) and the Best Boys Team (2nd year in row). As for medals, between them the team was awarded 9 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.

Sergeant James Tye, said after the event, “The team put tremendous effort into training for this event over the last couple of months and the results show. The training team are very proud of all the cadets that took part in the competition and are pleased that four of the team will go on to represent the Wing.”

Sergeant Denham, Sergeant Tye, Cadet Powell and Cadet Riches will now go on to represent the Wing at the Inter Wing Cross Country Competition being held at RAF Cranwell, Lincolnshire, on Sunday 9th December 2007.
