Reaching the Top

Wing Commander Paul Bower paid an important visit to 134 (Bedford) Squadron this week, to perform what he describes as “the best part of his job”. He called into the squadron to interview Flight Sergeant Russell, for promotion to Cadet Warrant Officer which is the most senior cadet rank.

Following a lengthy interview, Wing Commander Bower was pleased to announce that Esther had successfully passed, and he was pleased to be awarding her the new rank badges.

Esther Russell, who joined in April 2001, is currently the squadron’s longest running cadet. She is an extremely active member of the squadron and has been a member of the squadrons Wing Field Team for the past 6 years. Playing a vital role and helping the squadron win the drill trophy for an unbeaten 4 consecutive years.

In 2006, she was privileged to meet the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair at a special parade in Downing Street. This was followed up recently with an evening parade at the Tower of London. Earlier in 2007, she was treated to a day flying in Puma Helicopters at RAF Benson as a prize for being awarded the CO’s Award at the 2006 annual awards evening.

Newly promoted Esther said following the promotion “I am extremely privileged to be promoted to Cadet Warrant Officer. It is a very proud moment to be awarded such a promotion.”
