Running for Glory

Cadets from Bedford Squadron shone this weekend at the Regional Athletics Championship, bringing home glory and medals for themselves, their squadron, and the wing.

The competition saw the six wings in Central and East Region vie against each other in the whole range of athletics events, both on the track and on the field on Sunday 21st May 2007. Obviously, all of the contenders had previously won at inter-squadron level, so the standard was high.

Three of the representatives from Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire were from 134 (Bedford) Squadron: Cadet Warrant Officer Otulakowski, Cadet Morse, and Cadet Gilbert.

Cadet Gilbert, 15, who won the Squadron’s Best Sports Cadet of 2006 after representing wing and region numerous times in several sports, came away with a silver medal in high jump against some of the stiffest competition seen in years.

Cadet Morse, 14, who represented the wing for the first time this weekend, put in a supreme effort to win a silver medal in the “4 x 100m” relay event, after winning a silver medal in the 100m sprint at inter-squadron level in April.

Cadet Warrant Officer Otulakowski, 19, who has previously represented the Corps at Cross-country, was participating in two events. In the 800m race earned a silver medal, and then went on to gain a gold in the 1500m event, in two of the day’s highest charged contests.

Cadet Warrant Officer Otulakowski,

Cadet Redington Morse, 14, said of the day, ‘I really enjoyed today; I received my first Wing Blue for representing the Wing, and seeing everyone in the wing pull together to come second overall was fantastic.’

The event, which was held at Leicester’s Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium, saw some fine weather was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all of the competitors and organisers.

Overall Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing came second against tough cometition, thanks to the superb effort of all the cadets who took part at all levels.
