Roll Cameras, Action!

It’s that time of year again were everyone is rushing around trying to get everything done in time for the big day. No, not Christmas! For the cadets and staff of 134 (Bedford) Squadron the effort is on to prepare for the annual awards evening.

The event, which this year has a strong TV themed flavour to it, is being held on Thursday 14th December at DISC Chicksands. Invited guests will be treated to the usual Bedford format of entertainment with the first half of the evening given over to a sketch show produced by the cadets. The more formal second half of the proceedings will see Group Captain Haywood RAF, Chief of Staff at DISC Chicksands presenting the awards to this years winners. Trophies to be awarded will range from best new recruit to the modelling trophy and right through to a new addition this year, the Media and Communications award, however all eyes will be on the hotly contested Cadet of the Year award.

Preparations have been in place since mid October when the first ideas session was held, and it was from the world of television that the cadets have chosen to draw their inspiration. Now, you might be thinking that this means re-enacting current shows such as LOST or the X-Factor, but you’d be wrong. Much research has taken place with the audience in mind, influences from as far back as the mid 1970’s are sure to entertain and recall memories for at least some of the guests, while inclusions from more recent hit shows and commercials will shine through for any brothers or sisters of the cadets in the audience.

If it moves - video it!

AWO Oliver Browne who is in charge of this years awards evening said “This is always a popular event with our squadron members, and what many people do not realise is that while the whole experience is designed to entertain the guests there are also many other advantages to be taken from it. It’s an opportunity for creative skills to shine through and builds confidence within the performers, both of which we view as important life skills”.

While the event is by invite only there will be the chance, as has been the case with previous awards evenings for anyone not able to attend to view some of the highlights. It is a 134 tradition to commission special video productions for the sketch show and these will be uploaded to the video library on the squadron website after the event for anyone to view.
