 New to the Crew

26th November 2006

New to the Crew

As we approach the end of what has been an extremely busy and eventful year we have decided to take a look at the fortunes of three of the Squadrons newest recruits to see what they have gained from the Air Cadets in the short time they have been with us.

Each of these individuals has less than a year’s service but, as you will learn, they have achieved a great deal since joining.

Cadet Nicolas ‘Smurf’ Every, aged 13 years and 7 months joined the Squadron in January 2006. Since this time he has flown in a Grob Tutor T1, Seaking, Leopard Moth and Vigilant glider.

A keen sportsman, he has represented the Squadron in the Wing Swimming and Cross Country competitions.

Cadet Every has attended two of the Squadrons deployments to Folkestone, completing the ‘Spitfire’ March and taking part in the arduous adventure training weekend.

On the training front, he has successfully completed his first class cadet qualification, passed his weapons handling test on the Number 8 rifle, and is aiming for his squadron marksman qualification.

Even though he is relatively young in service he has secured a position in the Squadrons Banner Party as the banner orderly, a very real achievement gained through his deportment and drill ability.

Cadet April ‘Hobnob’ Hobden, aged 14 years and 8 months, joined the Squadron in August 2006, following the unit’s annual open day. Since this time she has flown in a Grob Tutor T1 and Seaking.

Within the first month of joining the unit she attended the Squadron’s adventure training weekend in Folkestone, where she participated fully in all the activities undertaken.

Having passed her weapons handling test on the Number 8 rifle she has been shooting with the Squadron at DISC Chicksands, Bedfordshire and hopes to achieve her marksmanship qualification in the near future.

Cadet Hobden has represented the Squadron at Wing Cross Country and came within the top ten during her race.

Cadet Jake ‘Noddy’ Riches, aged 14 years, joined the Squadron following its open day in August 2006. Since this time he has flown in a Grob Tutor T1 (during which he undertook aerobatic manoeuvres), Seaking and Vigilant aircraft.

Again unusually within the first month of joining the unit he attended the Squadron’s adventure training weekend in Folkestone where he participated fully in all the activities undertaken.

Passing with a skilled pass his weapons handling test on the Number 8 rifle Cadet Riches has been shooting with the Squadron at DISC Chicksands, Bedfordshire and has already gained his Squadron marksmanship qualification.

On the sporting front he has represented the Squadron at the Wing Cross Country competition as a member of the Junior Boys team.
