Though it is an attraction for millions of tourists a year, very few people have the honour of being invited to Buckingham Palace for tea. However, on Tuesday 18th July 2006, Flight Sergeant Antoni Otulakowski was indeed privileged to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, by royal appointment.
Possibly the most British of all events, the afternoon’s proceedings were set in the gardens of the palace, where there were three military bands playing a selection of music. Also set in these idyllic surroundings were the marquees, which contained food and drink for the guests. Being served in the Main Tea Tent was a variety of sumptuous foods, both savoury and sweet, including some ice cream made on Royal grounds at Windsor Castle, and, of course, tea.
The guests are invited as a result of being nominated for their merit and contribution to the community. Each nominee can invite an additional guest; Flt Sgt Otulakowski chose to extend the invitation to his mother. Both of whom enjoyed the day thoroughly.
Squadron Warrant Officer, AWO Taylor remarked ‘Antoni earned this great privilege through his hard work during his time as an NCO on the squadron. This is a tremendous event, which everyone should strive to be selected for.’
