High Performance

On Saturday 25th June 2006, Cadet Agabo Malyan and Flight Sergeant Antoni Otulakowski participated in the Inter-Regional Athletics Competition held at DCAE Cosford. Cdt Malyan participated in the Youth cadets’ javelin competition, while FS Otulakowski ran in the Junior Men’s 1500 metres event.

After spending a night at Donnington Barracks, a short drive from the venue at DCAE Cosford, it was an early start, with cadets waking up for a 0645 departure from the accommodation. Upon arrival at Cosford, the first job of the day was a fantastic breakfast at the Junior Ranks Mess.

Following this, the Central & East Region cadets set up their tent on the side of the track that would be their base for the day’s events. Once everybody was fitted out in their Regional sports kit, it was 1100 and time to start the field contests.

In his closely fought javelin competition, Cadet Malyan came an impressive fourth position, just missing out on a medal. Unfortunately he did not manage to match his Personal Best throw, however to represent his region was an honour in itself.

The Central & Eastern Regional Team

After the parade of athletes at midday, with Air Commodore Harrison taking the salute, the track events began. With three hours remaining until his event, time seemed to stretch out forever for FS Otulakowski. When his event came around, giving everything he had, FS Otulakowski managed to earn himself a bronze medal. The medal was presented to him by the Regional Commandant of Wales and West, the soon to be retiring Group Captain Kiggel.

With all the events completed, it was time for the final presentation parade. Everything was to fight for, as Wales and West Region and Central and East Region were neck and neck in the overall Best Sporting Region in the Corps. Central and East Region had a conclusive victory, winning the Junior Boys, Junior Women and Junior Men trophies.

Subsequently the Regional Blues, a respectable tribute to any cadet’s sporting ability, were awarded to all the cadets, having represented their Region against the rest in the Corps.

Many thanks are due to all the Sports Officers, and organisers who made the event possible, and the cadets who performed fantastically in all aspects of the competition.
