Practice Makes Perfect

At 10.10 hours on Sunday 25th June 2006, 12 cadets from 134 Bedford Squadron, under the command of Corporal Sean Denham, 15 years, marched onto the drill square at RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire to compete in the annual Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Drill Competition.

The competition sequence contains 50 individual drill movements and points are awarded for the precision and accuracy of each of these activities.

Having previously won the competition in 2004 and 2005 the pressure was on but the team rose to the challenge and produced a highly polished, extremely impressive and accurate display utilising much of the parade square.

All the hard work and hours of square bashing prior to the competition was rewarded when during the Wing Parade later in the day the team were declared to be the 2006 Drill Competition winners.

Group Captain John Ford, the Central and East Regional Commandant presented Corporal Denham with the Wing Drill Trophy.

This was Corporal Denham’s first year in charge of the Drill Team and he was selected for the position earlier in the year during the squadron’s field team selection weekend.

Adult Warrant Officer P Taylor the Squadrons qualified drill instructor said, “Teamwork, discipline and confidence abound within this team and I am so very proud of what they have achieved.”

The Wing Drill Trophy is 49 years old having been first presented in 1957. During its 49 year history 134 Bedford Squadron have won the drill competition 6 times, more times than any other unit in the Wing.

The team now goes on to represent the Wing at the Regional Field Day to be held at RAF Wittering on Sunday 3rd September 2006.
