134 (Bedford) Squadron |
On Saturday 11th February, 15 cadets attended a 134 (Bedford) Squadron training day. The day focused on helping cadets learning and practising essential field and leadership skills.

The cadets arrived at the squadron at 0800 hours. After preparing the equipment and themselves for the bridge build that will follow, the cadets departed to the river for their lesson in camouflage and concealment. They were taught the significance of exercises in the field with a lecture delivered by CWO Croft. Following this the cadets were then briefed to advance as one to the allocated bridge area, via an obstacle, which they had to tackle. Once this had been overcome the cadets split into two teams and were set the challenge of building the bridge that they would subsequently have to cross. All the cadets then started building whilst the newer cadets learnt the workings and reasons behind the bridge.

Once the bridge was erected, each team had to cross to the alternate side. Luckily all the cadets crossed the bridge with out any falling in. Following this the NCOs of the squadron demonstrated how to complete a regain on the bridge. After this staff and cadets partook in a competition to deconstruct the bridge as rapidly, and safely as possible, with the cadets winning. Once the bridge was taken down, a lecture on cooking in the field followed by CWO Croft to complete the day’s training.

After the events at the river, the cadets returned to the squadron headquarters, where they revised how to assemble a 12x12 tent. This was demonstrated by the NCO team first while the cadets watched, after which they put their newly learnt skills into practice.
Finally the squadron came together for a debrief of the day with the positive and negative points being discussed.
FS Otulakowski said, ‘it was a much enjoyed day and much was learnt by all. The day provided an excellent opportunity for training in preparation for Easter camp and beyond. Well done to all’.
CWO Croft shared his views on the day he said” With Field day looming this training will further advance our field operations.”
