134 (Bedford) Squadron |
The time had come for the four 134 (Bedford) Squadron members to embark upon a journey that would end with three of the members earning their first ever wing blues and the fourth achieving his seventh. It was time for the Cpl Denham, Cdt Smith, Cdt Clough and Cdt Nnoruka to represent the wing in the Inter Wing Junior Rugby Competition.
Arriving at the squadron at 0715 on the 29th of January 2006 the group made its way up to RAF Cranwell where the team would battle it out with five other wings, all competing to win the trophy at hand.
With the opening game against the previous winners, the prospect seemed daunting, although with some spectacular efforts from all of the team, Beds and Cambs Wing put on a brave show, despite loosing 22-0. With failure at the first game, morale was low and horizons lowered, as the trophy could no longer be claimed. But still with the runners up places to play for the team continued practicing, despite the cold and wind.
In the second game, the game got off to a marvellous start, with both a try and conversion from Beds and Cambs. Unfortunately it was not to be, and in the few remaining minutes, the team conceded two trys making the final totals 10-7. but with the promising play shown and the determination not to come last, Beds and Cambs were determined not to come last, and so with the last game looming practice resumed.
Playing in the 5th and 6th place playoffs, the game got under way, with Cdt Clough showing some amazing skills as the teams hooker. With a great start the team led the match and when the final whistle was blown the final score was 15-0 to Bedfordshire and Cambridge wing. With the game over, the well-deserved wing blues were handed out. Cadet’s Smith, Clough and Nnoruka receiving their first ever and Cpl Denham receiving his seventh. With the day drawing to a close it was announced that Cpl Denham had been chosen to go to the Regional team trials on the 26th of February. With this piece of news in mind it had been a successful day for all.
Squadron Warrant Officer Taylor commented, “Well done to all. It is always good to have new wing blues on the squadron and good luck to Corporal Denham in his Regional trials. A great effort by all.”
