With the Squadron Annual Awards Evening just around the corner, the cadets and staff of 134 (Bedford) Sqn have been putting the finishing touches to the event.
Dress Rehersals
Tradition now dictates that the second Thursday of December is reserved for the event which includes much more than just a presentation of Trophies. Parents, family members and other invited guests are treated to a function that now has a reputation as a highlight in the units’ calendar. The first half of the evening is given over as an opportunity to entertain and educate the audience through various sketches and demonstrations. This year there’s even a rumour of an element of audience participation.

Another factor that has become a tradition is to take advantage of the available multi media facilities and produce a video sketch, last year saw a spoof Panorama investigation into squadron life and the year before included an Air Cadet Special Big Brother. This year is no exception with a specially commissioned episode of Dr Who which is due to be screened as part of the evening. The film crew and actors spent a busy few days on location in and around Bedford to produce a very entertaining sketch. Don’t worry if you are not attending the awards evening, it is planned that the short film will be available as a download from the squadron website early in the New Year.
With the audience having been entertained by the first half, the evening will see a change of pace for the second half which is the awards ceremony itself. There are seven squadron trophies in total to be presented including Best New Recruit, Sports, Modelling and Cadet of the Year as well as a number of commendations, which will be awarded to those who have gone above their call of duty in service to the squadron. The awards will be presented by Group Captain Haywood, Chief of Staff at DISC Chicksands.
Much hard work has been put into the awards evening preparations over the last six weeks, AWO Taylor, judicial overseer for the event said “This is such a massive project to undertake each year, and every time sees a slight improvement. The format adds a whole new dimension and makes it more than just an awards evening, in fact it represents the dynamic approach to situations that the Squadron has become renowned for”.
