They Shall Not Grow Old

On Sunday 13th November 134 (Bedford) Squadron Air Cadets paraded on Bedford’s Embankment, to remember and pay respect to those who had fallen in conflict. Thirty cadets and three uniformed staff from the Squadron marched with representatives from many other organisations to the Bedford War memorial near the town’s suspension bridge.

The service, led by Rev. Nigel Morrell, included passages from the bible and the public were invited to join in with the two hymns. The two minutes silence was marked by the firing of blank rounds from a 105mm light gun, during which the Squadron’s standard was lowered by the bearer Cpl Alex Scully, following which Sgt Antoni Otulakowski laid the Squadron’s wreath.

The representatives then paraded along The Embankment, and concluded with a further short service at the Boer War memorial outside Bedford’s Swan Hotel.

Following the main parade, CWO Steven Croft, Flt Sgt Esther Russell and Sgt Antoni Otulakowski continued on to the Cardington Village Cemetery to place crosses of remembrance on the 29 military graves located there. This continued the tradition that 134 Squadron has established over the past years.

Adult Warrant Officer Browne said, “It is important for us to attend events like this, it helps the cadets to understand that not only in two World Wars but also more recent conflicts, people not much older than themselves gave their lives in pursuit of international freedom”
