134 (Bedford) Squadron |
Another win for Bedford was made this weekend, where an intrepid group of girls beat 16 other teams to win the Open Girls Netball trophy for the first time in many years. Team Captain Flt Sgt Russell said: ‘I am really pleased with the result, everyone put in all their effort and it has finally paid off.’

Bedford had a good start, winning their first game 3-0, as the games were only 4 minutes long this was an achievement in itself. We proceeded to win every game until we came up against Dunstable Squadron to whom we conceded defeat in a keenly fought match, finishing 3-1 to Dunstable. However Bedford was ready for revenge and when we beat our opponents in the semi-finals we knew we would be facing Dunstable again in the finals. A tough match ensued, with both teams very closely matched. A false call from the ref made it appear that Dunstable had won, however the rulebook was consulted and Bedford won in the final two minutes with a stunning goal from Cdt Ward, thereby winning the overall competition.
It doesn’t stop there, a number of cadets from Bedford were asked to stay behind and try out for the Wing team, so they will now be competing for Beds and Cambs Wing against the other Wings in the region in the near future.
It wasn’t all about the girls though; we had representation in the football field as
well, with Cadet Denham playing so well that he was asked to be on the Wing team for football.
All in all an enjoyable day was had, and the trophy brought home was quickly found a home in the new trophy cabinet, where it can now be admired from all sides.
