134 (Bedford) Squadron |
The Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire Wing cross-country competition was held on Sunday 21st November at Bassingborne Barracks near Royston, Herts. With cold damp winter conditions the scene was set for the final wing competition of 2004.
134 (Bedford) Sqn fielded a total of 18 cadets in the competition making the unit one of the most notable in terms of numbers, with representatives in 4 of the 5 categories. The first race was the Junior Girls in which a full team was entered and was lead home by Cdt Rebecca Ward to receive a gold medal. Further placing of 7th and 10th by the team helped to secure the overall team trophy, which the squadron had previously held. In the second race Sgt Marie-Anne Butler ran a good strong race to finish 3rd in the Senior Girls however with just two cadets in this class the unit was not eligible for a team entry. With 8 cadets in the Junior Boys category there was a strong chance of winning the trophy for the third year running. Cdt Sean Denim achieved a well-deserved 3rd place and other good strong runs by the team achieved their goal to re-claim the trophy for the squadron. In the Youth Boys category Cpl Antoni Otoulakowski finished in 3rd place overall and was followed up by good placing from the rest of the team to win a third trophy for the squadron.
As well as the three trophies, a total of 16 medals were claimed by 13 cadets from Bedford for both team and individual efforts. Once again the squadron openly demonstrated its success to the wing and many comments of congratulations were received, including a personal address by Wing Commander Bower. 134 (Bedford) Sqn continues to be strong heading into the final weeks of the calendar year, and this will provide the perfect launch for an even better year in 2005.
