A suspected heart attack, an unconscious male and a deep cut to a forearm were some of the scenarios facing Air Cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron during a weekend of First Aid training.
The cadets were taking part in a two day training event held by the Squadron at the DISC Chicksands, for the St. John Ambulance Youth Life Saver Plus Award.

Throughout the weekend the cadets trained and rehearsed various First Aid skills which included mouth to mouth resuscitation, placing casualties in the recovery position, treating shock and bandaging wounds.
The training was delivered by the Squadron’s resident First Aid expert Pilot Officer Robert Kitchener. The training was aimed at providing the cadets with sufficient skills to deal effectively with First Aid incidents and pass their Youth Life Saver Plus Award practical assessment.
Following the practical assessment, which involved three different First Aid incidents, five cadets successfully passed and will gain the coveted qualification badges. They were; Cpl Wesley Bradley (14 yrs), Cdt Danielle Pickering(14 yrs), Cdt Luke Taylor (14 yrs), Cdt Jordan Hilton (14 yrs) and Cdt Amy Spencer (14 yrs)
Pilot Officer Robert Kitchener said, “First Aid is a vital skill which can mean, literally, the difference between life and death. All of the cadets understood and appreciated the seriousness of the course. They took away with them vital knowledge that will benefit both themselves and others round them, not only on the Squadron, but in the outside world as a whole.”
