“We need fewer yobs and more YOPEYs”, said the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire,
Mr Samuel Whitbread, during the Bedfordshire Young Person of the Year (YOPEY)
Award, held at the Sculpture Gallery, Woburn Abbey.
The YOPEY scheme was founded by Mr Tony Gearing, a former national newspaper journalist tired of the ‘bad press’ given to young people. It has the support of Prime Minister Gordon Brown who calls the contest “a wonderful celebration of Britain’s youth.

This year's Awards Evening was attended by Sergeant James Tye, who was a
finalist in the competition in 2008. James returned to the competition this year
as one of the youth judges, having previously been asked to be one of the judges
in the Buckinghamshire competition in 2008.
As a Youth Judge, James’ task was to review the profiles of all 10 of the
Bedfordshire Finalists and to select his top five candidates, forwarding his
selections to Tony Gearing for consideration. All of the candidates had
displayed exceptional character and devotion to others and particularly to the
more deprived members of the community.
During the Awards Evening, James said, “This year’s competition was extremely difficult to judge with all the finalists doing such great and fantastic things within their communities that make such a difference to young people.”
More details of the YOPEY scheme can be found on their website.
