Staff and cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron, were among 300 Air Cadets who participated in the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Annual Fieldcraft Camp, held at Wathgill Camp, Catterick Garrison , North Yorkshire. Whilst away, the cadets undertook a variety of tasks in a demanding programme, designed to challenge their mental agility, physical robustness, leadership and teamwork. This encompassed Fieldcraft training, land navigation, bridge building, first aid, climbing and abseiling and radio training, all of which culminated in a 36 hour Field Exercise.

Eight cadets from 134 Squadron attended a shoot at the Defence Intelligence Security Centre (DISC) Chicksands in Bedfordshire. The aim was to improve marksmanship skills at both 25m and 50m distances using the L98A2 Cadet General Purpose Rifle. In keeping with the Air Training Corps Marksman Award requirements, the disciplines practiced were Grouping, Snap, Rapid and Deliberate. Excellent weapon handling was demonstrated by all qualified firers and for two new cadets, the day proved an excellent taster of what's expected once qualified.

On one of the finest spring mornings that this year has brought us, so far, cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron wasted no time by lying around in the sun, but headed to Wattisham Airfield, to be flown in a RAF Sea King Search and Rescue (S&R) Helicopter, flying high over the rural fields of Suffolk.

Cadets Rhys Barton (13), Lewis Holly (14), George Livingstone (14) and Stan Maguire (14) enjoyed a classic Spring day gliding with the Four Counties Gliding Club based at RAF Wittering. Together they achieved over 100 minutes of circuits and soaring. The day also involved operational aspects of post landing recovery, connecting the winch cable, maintaining level wings whilst launching and learning the signals required for launching gliders into the skies. Some even experienced the operation and view from the winch house.

Cadets Lauren Fletcher (14), Will Nicholls (15) and Nathan Turpin (15) attended a week’s adventure training course at the National Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre (NACATC) in Windermere. The aim of the week was to expose the cadets to a wild county area, hone navigation skills and gain the Bronze National Navigation Award (NNA).

Cadets Lauren Fletcher (14), Marti Foy (18), Levi Jack (14), Will Nicholls (15) and Joshua Purcell (16) gained the prestigious Air Cadet Communicators Badge. The course required completing 6 of 11 available modules, two of which are compulsory. Training commenced over dedicated weekends and cadets are proficient in the use of Private Mobile Radio, Very High Frequency and Ultra High Frequency. History and theoretical studies of the use of Radio and Radar since their conception were also undertaken along with analysing multiple Atlantic and North American Air Traffic Control High Frequency transmissions.

Seven cadets from 134 (Bedford) Squadron have spent their half term completing the expedition section of their Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award. The team comprising of Cadets Nathan Turpin(15), William Cohen(14), Jordan Williams(15), William Woodward(15), Levi Jack(14), Caleb Masih(14) and Leonie Gomes(14), put their navigation, teamwork and decision making skills to the test in North Bedfordshire, culminating in a two day expedition, including one overnight camp.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Jonathan Bell (17 yrs), from 134 (Bedford) Squadron, has been awarded a prestigious Air Cadet Pilot Scheme Scholarship. The scholarship will fund 12 hours of flying in either a Grob Tutor or the civilian equivalent, the Grob 115D Heron Light Aircraft, leading to a solo flight.

A 134 (Bedford) Squadron cadet has been selected to be awarded the prestigious Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators (GAPAN) Gliding Scholarship. Flight Sergeant Jonathan Bell (17 yrs) was one of four cadets in the Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire Wing to be awarded this Scholarship. He has already gained his Silver Gliding Wings at 616 VGS, RAF Henlow and this Award will further hone his flying skills.
